A Festa Junina tem suas origens na cultura europeia da época da Idade Média. Foi trazida para o Brasil pelos colonizadores portugueses, porém sofreu várias adaptações em nosso território, onde foram incorporadas tradições brasileiras.
Para cada santo há um tipo de fogueira diferente. Na fogueira de São João as madeiras são colocadas em formato de cone. Na fogueira de Santo Antônio, as madeiras são colocadas em formato de quadrado. Já na fogueira de São Pedro, as madeiras ficam na posição de triângulo.
